The LEDs are recessed into a piece of barstock that has had some flats machined onto it. Heavy threading at the join between the endcap and the body makes the junction almost as solid as the rest of this flashlight. The LEDs are very bright (not quite eye-damaging, but bright enough for old eyes trying to do delicate work), and being LEDs, allow for a very long battery life.

The batteries are a little expensive compared to AAs, but the advantages of this ligh far outweigh this one issue.

I love this light. It is very bright and is a wide angel light just right for walking in the woods at night. The light is very smothe without a hot spot. It is NOT a 'spot light' but very diffused because of the 200 points of light from the LEDs, much like a florescent portable light. It is a handful, metal and very solid. It feels like you could whack something with it if you had to. There is a hand contoured rubber grip surrounding the light that will move slightly so it can be positioned for your fingers I guess. The unintentional movement is a little annoying but not a big problem and probably a spot of adhesive would stop it. What I DIDN'T like are the battery holders. There are two holders accepting 8 AA batteries that are made of something like 'plastic'. They work fine now but I know sometime in the future (years?) one of the flimsy holders will break. A great rugged light with 2 flimsy battery holders. Perhaps I worry too much. The head is a tad over 4 1/4 inches. A holder of some kind would be nice. I see Maglite Mini Mags for around $10 all of the time. They are handy little flashlights. This model was the older incandecent bulb type flashlight. They are OK, but if your have ever experienced an LED flashlight, it hard to be happy with the old style bulb. I was able to pick up my Blue Mini Mag for $7.50, shipping included. I added a Terralux TLE-20 LED upgrade for $13. So I now have $20 into it. Now it has a nice bright white light, about 28 Lumens, and the battery life is extended by six times. I figure over time the Terralux LED upgrade will pay for itself in saving on batteries. If I was looking for a new Mini Mag, I would probably just buy the newer LED version of the flashlight. I see them on sale for around $20. In my opinion the older incandecent Mini Mags benefit greatly from the LED upgrade, thus I only gave it 4 stars. But I am very happy with my upgraded version, and would recommend the upgrade if you already own an older Mini Mag. It is useful when I get up in the middle of the night, and wander around the house. I still have my bigger 4 D cell Maglite with an LED upgrade for outside duty, it is much brighter and has a much longer throw. I purchased this Dorcy Hawkeye, a Streamlight Task-Light 2AA and a Mini Maglite at the same time. Each has its own merits.
The Dorcy Hawkeye is by far the brightest of the three. The rubberized grip is the most comfortable in the hand. It also has a side clicker on-off switch.
The 25 lumen Streamlight's best attribute is the abilility to strobe (note that there were no instructions included with the package). Just hold the side clicker for three seconds and the strobe starts. It also has high and low settings. Even on high, the brightness does not come close to the Dorcy. The strobe can be a safety device for a disabled auto, so into the glove box it goes.
The Mini Maglite is compact. It is not very comfortable to hold. Though cross-hatched the handle is slick. It is not very bright. It is very cheap, though well made. I thought that the L.E.D. upgrade combo would help. It made the light weaker so I put back the original Krypton bulb. I do use and like the rear push button switch that came with the combo upgrade. I also bought a rubber 6 sided head cap so that the Mag would not roll around. It goes into the night stand drawer.

When they say Solitaire, they're not just describing the flashlight size, they're describing the strength of the beam! Compared to today's LED lights, this is one wimpy flashlight. Imagine the amount of light given off from striking a matchstick. The Solitaire gives about half that.

My dime store single LED push-button keylight illuminates better than this product. Adjusting the beam didn't enhance the strength. This was disappointing as a Maglite product.

This LED flashlight is nicely priced, has good light output and fit comfortably in my pocket. Initially I used it almost daily for a number of weeks and the batteries held up well. However, after a few weeks of use the light-on function proved quite inconsistent. I frequently needed to turn the metal cap at the bulb end until the appropriate internal contact was completed so the light came on. Even when finally turned on, the light was often dim without further fiddling, and it frequently turned itself off so the front cap needed readjustment to again turn the unit on. I cleaned the front internal contact with an eraser, but this did not eliminate the problem.

It may be that my sample is an outlier-exception, and other folks will not find a similar problem. However, the design of the contact at the bulb end does seems to have the potential to mis-function as occurred with my unit.

Bought this little light because it uses commonly found batteries and small enough to attach to a keychain. The construction quality is solid and feels like it will be a dependable light for many years to come. The switch at the butt of the flashlight seems to be fairly robust. It takes just enough effort to turn it -- this way you don't have to worry about accidentally turning it on in the pocket. I like the removable keychain holder. This design seems to hold the flashlight well while allowing easy quick release. Hopefully this keychain holder will not get loose over time.

About the light quality. It is bright enough for most emergency situations. The only thing that I didn't like about this flashlight is that the light is actually slightly violet. The further away the lit subject is, the more violet the light seems. This is the reason for the 4 stars and not 5.

This light is not suitable for self defense as it is bright but not blindingly bright. It is small enough to hold in your hand but not enough to strike with.

Overall, I am satisfied with the light. It is relatively inexpensive and will last a long time I hope. Flashlight buffs might look elsewhere but I find the quality on par with more expensive tactical lights.
