I already own a few of the hand-crank type models but found they didn't hold the charge very long. Reading reviews of the 'shake' type sounded like they performed better. Unfortunately it does worse. To have a beam bright enought for seeing detail, you have to constantly shake it which of course makes it harder to see too.
I give it three stars because: (Pros) 1. It is rugged and seems waterproof as claimed (haven't tested) 2. The lithium battery backup is nice since the crank models I have don't have this option. 3. It service the general purpose, you can just toss it in your tool box and forget it until you need it. (Cons) 1. You have to be careful of the large magnet in the unit near anything magnetically sensitive. 2. On 'shake' power, the light beam is too dull to be useful for seeing any detail. 3. To get a bright beam you have to shake constantly or use the batteries which defeats the purpose.
One last note: My unit arrived with the lithium batteries already dead so I had to by new ones adding $5 to the overall cost of the unit.Get more detail about Freedom Flashlight 00194-6 Hybrid LED Flashlight, Red.
