If you're looking for a good all around flashlight/torch this is it. There are bigger ones, smaller ones, and a bunch of more expensive ones but this Coast LED LENSER gets the job done. I have several LED flashlights, (it's a guy thing) and this one is probably the best for general use. It doesn't throw a super tight beam like most tactical lights. Do not misconstrue that to mean that it's somehow inferior - to the contrary, it puts out the broadest beam I've ever encountered, we're talkin' almost 180 degrees. However, it does have an extra bright "center weighted" area. I guess with 100 lumens to work with you can spread them around and still get all the brightness you need.
For my non scientific test, I walked into a dark bedroom and the entire room was well lit and yet I still had the extra bright blue/white center area to work with. I didn't have to wave it around to see the entire room like you would with a narrow beam light. Outside it gets even better, if you're walking in total darkness, it's really nice to light up a broad area. Who cares if a flashlight can burn someone's retina at 300 yards, what I want to see is that rattlesnake off to the left or right at 15-20 yards. Understand, you aren't giving up anything, this thing puts out a TON of light, usable light.
Oh yeah, it has a red LED if you need that as well. I'm not real sure why I need that but I've got, by God. They say it's for reading maps in dark but why an I hiking after dark in the first place; Army Rangers, Marine Recon, Navy Seals, and of course the top dogs - U.S. Air Force's elite Combat Search and Rescue team, would be the exceptions.
