Fenix has done it again.

Fenix in my opinion is one of if not the best flashlight companies in the world as of my writing this. I now own a fenix E01 (1aaa cell light), Fenix LD20, and now the L1T v.2. All three are of incredibly high quality and surely will last a lifetime. Even as LED lights continue to get better these lights will never not be useful.

I have a LD20 with it's multiple output modes and it is ergonomic and awesome, but I wanted a better light for carrying around in my pocket or coat. I though about an LD10 which I know from reviews is basically a smaller LD20. Sounds great, but I chose the L1T over the LD10 for several reason: (keep in mind both are 1aa lights)

-More simplicity -- fewer modes of output
-Slightly smaller
-Weighs less
-Cheaper
-No clip (I actually don't like the clips on the "newer" LD10 and LD20
-More round (i.e. fits hand well--I haven't actually held the LD10 though so this could be up in the air)


I thought about ergonomics and just from looking at both lights I thought I would like this one better. The only things I don't like about the light or at least things that could be improved are:

-can't stand on tail like a candle
-needs a little more knurling for grip (still feels great in hand though-- could just be better)
-the lanyard hole is kind of hard to put a lanyard though (not an issue because I don't plan on using one with this light)


If you own a LD20 then I can tell you the high mode on this light is just slightly less bright than the "high" mode on that light. And it may vary, but the tint is slightly less warm than the LD20. Oh and 15 hours on low is amazing--yeah I know the LD10 is better, but if you poo poo 15 hours on one aa light you are an idiot either way :) . Low mode is about as bright as a streamlight micro or streamlight stylus pro.


Overall I would rate this light 9.5 out of 10. I think for any product to be 10/10 it almost inherently has to be custom. I initially got one for trial (we already had the batteries & chargers for other tools) and it held up pretty good in an industrial/heavy mfg environment, so we bought a bunch more.

It's a good thing that the head "snaps off" the body, as that happens quite a bit when dropped to a concrete floor. The only negative is that the lens ring (black part on the head) doesn't have sufficient threads to hold on, so it frequently comes apart in big falls. Where To Buy Inova X1 LED Flashlight - Black

For a tiny 2-ounce flashlight, the Inova X1 is amazing and just about perfect.

It's 47% as large/heavy, and about 50% as intense as the MagLite LED (2-AA).

It's an ideal just-in-case flashlight for backpack/purse/travel -- when tiny rules.

For the glove box of your car, the MagLite LED (2-AA) is much better. It will light up a reflective street sign really well from about 75 feet away, while the Inova X1 will illuminate it equally well from about 36 ft. away.

Most affordable LED flashlights do not throw a concentrated beam nearly as well as these two models.

The "contacts problem" is easily solved. Clean the endcap grease off them with a napkin and pencil eraser (see below).

Beam focus: The beam has two well defined parts. The center beam lights a 8" diameter spot on a wall 10 ft away (4 degrees). At the same time an outer beam (53 degrees) illuminates a 10 ft diameter area. This compares to the MAGLITE LED 2-AA which dishes out a much brighter 8" diameter spot (at 10 ft distance) and the rest of the light fills a 8-ft diameter area (44 degrees).

Both models have plastic lenses which will scratch over time.

Both models now have a hole for tether/wrist strap (Older MagLite LED did not.)

Stick with AA batteries for all your devices. Best deal on rechargeables, and only one size to stock up on. Borrow from other devices in a pinch. I never go AAA...they're 2-1/2 times as expensive per amp-hour of output, and in flashlights they're also less space-efficient (per amp-hour of output).

Contacts problem: I noticed after 3 months that the "momentary-on" button started to work poorly, and even the full-on position required a firm twist. Other reviewers had this problem. It was easily solved by cleaning endcap grease off the contacts (barrel end, disk inside endcap, and battery ends) with a napkin and pencil eraser.

The LEDs give something akin to good moon light - so don't expect 1000 watt flood lighting !
For seeing pathways on dark nights, lighting up steps, and perhaps as deer scarcer they work great. They come on as you approach and off about 1 min later.
They are designed to be hang on walls. The wedge shape is perfect for getting light during the day i.e. charging, and then lighting the area beneath them when a warm body passes by (IR activated).

I bought this flashlight after trailing a small blood trail with a normal flashlight for two hours one night. When I had to use it several days after it arrived, I was impressed that it really did make the blood stand out with a red color and subdued the background colors well. If you believe other online reviews, the three LED colors make this the most effective Gerber product so far, but I have never seen any others in operation. I would definitely recommend it, though some might consider these type of flashlights expensive.
